What a Thai marriage visa gives you

The marriage visa is a Non-Immigrant O visa for the foreign spouse of a Thai national. It is popular precisely because of what it allows: you can live in Thailand a year at a time without leaving the country, renew it inside Thailand each year as long as you still meet the conditions, and — unlike a retirement visa — you may work legally provided you also hold a work permit.

It is granted only after the marriage is legally registered in Thailand, and it requires financial evidence in your own name. Those two steps are where most applications stall, and both are what we handle for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much money do I need for a Thai marriage visa?

You need 400,000 THB deposited in a Thai bank account in your own name, held continuously for at least two months before you apply. Alternatively you can show a monthly income above 40,000 THB, or a certification letter from your embassy. For renewals the funds must have been in the account for at least three months.

Can I work in Thailand on a marriage visa?

Yes — this is the main practical advantage over a retirement visa. A marriage visa permits legal employment in Thailand provided you also obtain a work permit. The visa alone is not enough; the work permit is a separate application, which we can also handle.

Do we have to register the marriage in Thailand?

For a Thai marriage visa, yes — the marriage must be legally registered with a Thai district office. If you married abroad, that marriage generally needs to be recognised and recorded in Thailand first. Contact us with your situation and we will tell you which route applies.

How long does marriage registration take?

About 5–6 days in total. It involves obtaining a certificate of single status from your embassy, having documents translated by a certified translator, verifying them at the Department of Consular Affairs, and then registering at a district office with at least two witnesses. Some of these steps must be done in Bangkok.

Can I apply if I entered on a tourist visa or visa exemption?

Yes. Once you are legally married to a Thai national in Thailand you can apply to change your visa status, provided your current permission to stay has at least 21 days remaining. Applying inside Thailand also requires at least 14 days of validity, with a further 30 days available for document preparation.

What is the 90-day report?

Marriage visa holders must report their address to their nearest immigration office every 90 days using form TM.47. If you travel outside Thailand, the 90-day count restarts from the date you re-enter.

What happens to my visa if we divorce?

The marriage visa is cancelled automatically on divorce, and the foreign spouse is required to leave Thailand. If your circumstances change, speak to us early — there may be another visa category you qualify for.

How long does the visa take, and what does it cost?

Approximately 3–4 weeks once documents are complete. Submit them at least three weeks before your current visa expires. Our service fee depends on which parts of the process you need; the first consultation is free and we quote in writing.
